Meet Dr. Belnap
Dr. Belnap, the founding physician of West Coast Pain Specialists, is a double board-certified specialist in the fields of Pain Management and Rehabilitation Medicine. He completed his undergraduate training at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT and medical school at Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ.
He then completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC followed by a fellowship in Pain Management at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. He served as Chief Resident towards the end of his residency and upon completion of the program was selected as Chief of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
He was then chosen by the Surgeon General of the Army to relocate west with the task to help establish a highly specialized combat casualty rehabilitation center at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He became the first Medical Director of this center and upon separation from the military was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal which is equivalent to the Bronze Star for combat service.
Dr. Belnap has expertise in providing treatment for a wide array of conditions including sports injuries, spine & joint disorders, complex polytraumatic injuries, amputations, and neurologic disorders. He has been a contributing author in peer-reviewed journal articles and medical textbook chapters in his specialty. He has also given numerous presentations at national and local conferences throughout his career. He is a native of Southern California and enjoys basketball, volleyball, surfing, volunteering in his church & community, and spending time with his wife and five children.
Dr. Kyle Norton
Dr. Kyle Norton is a fellowship-trained physician specializing in Pain Management and Anesthesiology, with advanced expertise in minimally invasive, image-guided treatments for acute and chronic pain. He completed his undergraduate education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, with a degree in Spanish after studying abroad in both Spain and Mexico. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine.
Following medical school, Dr. Norton completed a Transitional Year internship at Southern Hills Hospital in Las Vegas, where he was honored as Most Valuable Resident and became the first resident to receive the hospital's iCare Employee of the Month Award for exceptional patient care. He subsequently completed his Anesthesiology residency at UC San Diego, receiving comprehensive training in perioperative medicine, critical care, regional anesthesia, advanced airway management, and acute pain management. He then completed a Pain Medicine fellowship at UC San Diego, where he developed advanced expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of complex pain conditions using state-of-the-art, image-guided procedures including epidural steroid injections, radiofrequency ablation, cryoneurolysis, spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, minimally invasive lumbar decompression (MILD), basivertebral nerve ablation, regenerative medicine, and other advanced interventional techniques.
Dr. Norton has a particular passion for non-opioid, evidence-based pain management and is dedicated to helping patients regain function while minimizing reliance on long-term medications. His clinical interests include neuropathic pain, spine disorders, joint pain, peripheral nerve disorders, sports injuries, and ultrasound-guided cryoneurolysis.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Norton is actively involved in research and innovation within the field of pain medicine. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and presented his work at national scientific meetings. His research has focused on neuromodulation, complex regional pain syndrome, cryoneurolysis, novel neuraxial technologies, and other emerging interventional pain therapies. He remains committed to advancing the field through clinical research, education, and the development of innovative treatment approaches.
When not at work, Dr. Norton enjoys surfing, traveling, boxing, scuba diving, playing street hockey, and spending time outdoors with his wife and their three children. He is fluent in Spanish and also speaks West African Krio, skills that have allowed him to care for diverse patient populations both in the United States and abroad. His philosophy of care centers on treating every patient with compassion, respect, and individualized attention while utilizing the latest evidence-based techniques to restore function, improve quality of life, and help patients return to the activities they love.
Meet The Team
Lauren PA
Lauren joins us from Mayo Clinic where she obtained a Master of Physician Assistant Studies and worked as a hospitalist in cardiovascular surgery. Before moving to Encinitas at age 5, Lauren lived in Seoul, South Korea. Upon graduation from La Costa Canyon High School, she moved to Virginia to attend Southern Virginia University (SVU) where she had been recruited to play tennis. After one year of university, Lauren returned to South Korea to serve an 18-month mission. During undergrad, Lauren was awarded Virginia Sports Information Directors Academic Allstate Honors and was named Southern Virginia University Senior Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Lauren graduated from SVU with a Biochemistry degree. While preparing for physician assistant school Lauren worked as a medical assistant at West Coast Pain Specialists. Lauren was accepted into the inaugural PA class at Mayo Clinic and upon completion of the program, accepted a position in the Cardiovascular Surgery Department where she specialized in congenital heart disease. Lauren is excited to be back in Encinitas working with Dr. Belnap and the West Coast Pain Specialists team
Mary Anne, Nursing / Billing
Mary Anne pursued nursing because of her love for people and human biology. She became a Certified Nursing Assistant in high school, then continued at the No. 1 rated nursing school in Arizona and became a Registered Nurse at the age of 21. Her first job after nursing school took her to Southern Idaho as a Hospice Case Manager, which she loved; however, it was cut short by a stronger desire to serve for her church.
Mary Anne lived in El Salvador, Central America for a year and a half as a missionary; and as a nurse, she was assigned to care for all the health needs of the missionaries in the El Salvador/Belize regions. Upon returning to the USA, Mary Anne took a hiatus from work to recuperate. As Mary Anne returned to nursing, she found a perfect fit at WCPS.
